What’s in a name?

It took Chuck and me a couple of weeks to finally decide on Lucy’s name. Some of that time was debating about her first name and whether or not we felt like the name we picked out long before suited her once we saw her pictures. Then a few more days went by as we waited to correspond with a friend who was in Europe on business; she is originally from China. We had a couple thoughts for her middle name, but wanted our friend’s input to make sure we weren’t selecting the wrong character in Mandarin.

So, without further ado, our sweet little girl will be Lucy Meixing. Chuck and I have liked the name Lucy for quite some time but when we read that the name comes from the Latin lux – meaning light, that cemented it for us. We love the meaning behind this as we were reminded of a couple Bible verses.

You are the light of the world… Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. – Matthew 5:14-16

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12

For Lucy’s middle name, we are naming her after Esther – the orphan queen in the Bible. This brave woman’s actions “for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14) were key in saving the Jewish people in Persia from being killed. Esther is a Persian name meaning star. The Chinese word for star is xing (pronounced “zing”). We also loved that in Chinese, the symbol for xing has connotations of brightness and hope. Mei (pronounced “may”) means “beautiful” and of course we think Lucy is beautiful on the outside but we hope she will also grow to be beautiful on the inside – much like Esther whose selfless actions benefited others greatly.

On a different note, might you help us bring our sweet Lucy home?  Please read our “How You Can Help” page or go to www.gofundme.com/AdoptingLucy

Many, many thanks!
